Mike Hatch joined the Minneapolis law firm of Blackwell Burke P.A. as Special Counsel in 2007 practicing in the areas of complex litigation, regulatory compliance, insurance, healthcare, unfair competition, and counseling and advising clients on investigations.  As Minnesota Attorney General from 1999 to 2007, Mr. Hatch was given credit for making changes in the health care industry, taking action against insurers for improper denials of mental health claims, separating hospital systems from HMOs where there was financial waste, getting HMOs and hospitals to reduce excessive administrative expenses, shutting down nursing homes that abused patients, and putting a halt to an overly consolidated Minnesota health care market. He is described as a “street fighter” who as Minnesota Attorney General took on banks, HMOs, insurers and utility companies that broke the law. While his “bulldog” approach earned him the wrath of many powerful interest groups, it is also described as the source for his legal victories. Mr. Hatch does not duck his reputation for being tough, although he likes to redefine it as passion. He describes his tenure as one focused on corporate responsibility.

Prior to being Attorney General, Mr. Hatch was in private practice at the law firm of Hatch, Eiden & Pihlstrom, a firm he headed from 1992 to 1998. As an attorney, Mr. Hatch earned a national reputation for representing women with breast cancer who were denied coverage by their health insurers. From 1983 to 1990, Mr. Hatch served the state as Commissioner of Commerce, regulating the banking, securities, insurance, financial and real estate industries. He delivered a reputation as a zealous consumer watchdog.
